What is a Violin?

The violin is a wooden chordophone, and is the smallest and highest-pitched instrument (soprano) in use in the violin family. Smaller violin-like instruments exist, such as the violino piccolo and the pochette, but these are virtually unused. Most violins have a hollow wooden body, and commonly have four strings (sometimes five)

What are the parts of a violin

• Body:

  The body includes the belly (soundboard) made of spruce or pine, and the back made of maple or similar hardwood. These are connected by ribs, forming a resonant chamber that amplifies sound. The body shape, with its upper and lower bouts and indented waist

• Neck and Fingerboard:

  The neck, made of sycamore, supports the fingerboard, which is unfretted and allows for precise pitch control. The fingerboard is glued to the neck and extends over the body toward the bridge.

• Bridge:

• Sound Post and Bass Bar:

• Strings and Tailpiece:

  The violin has four strings tuned in fifths. They are attached to tuning pegs at the top and a tailpiece at the bottom, which is anchored by a tailpin.
